Dataset: Is Australian democracy in decline?

Between 2013 and 2020, the Commonwealth of Australia has enjoyed the top spot as the strongest democracy in Asia according to the Democracy Index released annually by Freedom House. It dropped to second place in 2021 and then third in 2022, trailing behind New Zealand and Japan.

Furthermore, Australia’s 2022 freedom index score slipped to 95, a still respectable figure but the lowest recorded since Freedom House updated its aggregate score methodology in 2003,
