Between 2008 and 2019, the aggregate average of the democracy index for all Asia-Pacific countries as published by Freedom House saw a 2.67 points increase. During the same period, the world average saw a 2.76 points decrease.

Yet, in the span of just two years since the pandemic hit in early 2020, the region’s democracy index has suffered a massive plunge.
